ROBINS

Robins are a medium sized bird, 9-11 inches (23-28cm)and are among the most common and well-known birds in North America. Also known as robin redbreast...due to the bright "orange" breast on the male...much duller on the female. Young robins are very similar to adults except for the heavily spotted tummies.
Here in Ontario, it is often believed that the sighting of the first robin is a sure sign of spring. These are one of the few birds that don't make use of feeders, prefering worms, bugs and fruit. Robins eat different types of food depending on the time of day; they eat earthworms early in the day and more fruit later in the day. Because the robin forages largely on lawns, it is vulnerable to pesticide poisoning and can be an important indicator of chemical pollution.

Proud Walk

2007
We truly enjoyed the robins this year. We would waken to their songs and they'd usually be the last bird we'd hear in the evenings. Seems like they arrived very early in the year so we put bread crumbs in the feeder...I do believe it was much appreciated. Had never really noticed the young 'uns before, how cute they are with all their spots!
