SPARROWS

Sparrows are one of the most common birds we see in our area. In general they tend to be small, 14-16 cm (5.5-6.5 in) plump brownish birds with short tails and stubby beaks.Although they will consume small insects they are primarily seed eaters.
The Sparrow family of birds includes sparrows, finches, grosbeaks, buntings and juncos. Collectively, these are the largest family of birds in the world.

2006

I took this group of photos during the summer and fall of 2006 in our backyard. Stubs was a particular favourite of ours, we were surprised to see him thrive throughout the summer...didn't think a bird could fly without a tail. 'Feeding time' is a favourite photo even though it isn't very good. Watching the babies being fed was a real thrill!! During the height of summer 'feeding frenzy' is a daily sight for us.

2007

Stubbs did put in an appearance this year but sadly didn't stay around for the summer. We added a window box towards the end of the year, outside my computer room. What fun it was watching the various birds enjoying the seed.
