Indigo buntings are members of the finch family. The male's distinctive plumage looks blue in sunlight and almost black in shade or backlighting. They are usually found in old fields, clearings and some deciduous forest edges.
The Indigo Bunting migrates at night, using the stars for guidance. It learns its orientation to the night sky from its experience as a young bird observing the stars.
